The engine in your Kia has been misfiring, and you've run an inspection. Finding the leads on the spark plugs excessively widened, or worse, corroded, it's official: it's time to replace them.

Here's how to do it. Just be sure to start with a cool engine; all you'll need is:

Safety goggles and work gloves
Socket wrenches
A wire gauge spark plug gap tool (if your model's owner's manual says to use one)
A socket swivel (for plugs that are hard to reach)
Anti-seize thread and dielectric silicone compound
An extension bar

Afterward, clean the plugs regularly so they last longer. You can wipe debris off them with a cloth (or blast it off using a can of compressed air), scrape crud off the firing ends with fine-grit sandpaper, and run a wire brush over the plugs' threads. Alternatively, you can spray them with brake cleaner and wipe them off; It works pretty well, too.
