Whatever you call the shifter in your Kia vehicle -- a gear shift, a gear shifter, or just a stick shift -- it controls the transmission, and thus, controls your drive.

In other words, its knob makes all the difference. If your ride -- take the Kia Seltos, for instance -- has, say, an automatic, it makes going between park, reverse, and drive easier. If the assembly's a manual, though -- say, on a Kia Soul -- it makes controlling gear changes easier relative to engine rpm.

So, if the knob's faded, worn out, or broken, you should replace it ASAP. Replacing it is easy, even if all you want is a change of style. For most auto transmissions, you just have to tighten a new one onto the shift rod with a couple small screws. For a manual, you just thread the new one onto the shift rod. Here's the process, for most cases.

Set the emergency brake and shift your vehicle into neutral.
Take a wrench and turn the old knob counterclockwise to remove it; you can unscrew it manually, too, sometimes.
Screw the new knob on directly (otherwise, fit it using any adapter you have to).

Just know one thing before buying: your old knob's thread diameter. That way, you'll be able to find a new one that's the right size. Your best bet: buying OEM.
